Regular Board Meeting Minutes

February 20, 2018

Call to order

President Gaston called the regularly monthly board meeting to order at 6:30 pm with the following trustees present: Jane Gaston, Joyce Hahn, Lynn Larimer, Jane Mordecai, Joyce Raver and Gayla Wilkerson. Trustee Ann Wilzbach arrived at 6:35 pm. Trustee Tom Champion arrived at 6:38 pm. Also in attendance were Library Director Kim Keller and Assistant Library Director Kim Baldridge. There were no visitors.

Secretary’s Report

The minutes of the January 16, 2018, minutes were approved as presented on a motion by Trustee Raver with a second by Trustee McGuire. All approved.

Treasurer’s Report

The bills for February 2018 totaling $14,336.01 were examined and approved on a motion by Trustee Wilzbach with a second by Trustee McGuire. All voted “yes” on roll call.

A motion to transfer $13,780.00 from the Money Market account into the Checking account for the purpose of paying the February bills was made by Trustee McGuire with a second by Trustee Wilkerson. All voted “yes” on roll call.

The treasurer’s report for February 2018 was presented and approved on a motion by Trustee Champion with a second by Trustee WIlzbach. All voted “yes” on roll call.

Director’s Report

The memorial for Robert “Bob” Hahn has reached $1,510.00. Staff will work with Joyce Hahn for the best way to honor Bob’s memory.

Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Leonard Ferguson offered BBL the opportunity to share a booth at this year’s Home Show. Director Keller, Program Assistant Bowen and Circulation Clerk Ricker-Pitts will man the booth on March 3 & 4.

Valentines, that had been donated to the library about 3 years ago, were given away prior to this Valentine’s Day. This posting on the library’s Facebook page reached close to 10,800 people.

Amy Bowen was hired as the new Programs Assistant. Her first day was February 1.

Director Keller and Program Assistant Bowen have many activities planned for the coming months. Some examples are: Dr. Seuss Birthday Party, Bryan-Bennett Women’s Coffee, Gentleman’s Coffee, W. J. Bryan Coffee on William Jennings Bryan’s birthday, an evening with Frank Brinkerhoff, Princess and Pirate Party, Ladies’ Afternoon Tea, plus plans for Summer Reading.

Director Keller was the guest speaker at a Salem Chamber luncheon on February 15. She presented a program on programming at the library.

The SCHS yearbooks for 1950-1989 have been digitized. A press release will be released this week.

The Olive Tree group will host a Safety Awareness program at BBL on February 22 at 5:30 pm at BBL.

Election Judge Training will be held at BBL on March 7.

Nancy Stanford will hold a book signing for her second book at BBL on March 1 at 6 pm.

BBL is working with the City on a genealogy fair as part of the Bicentennial Celebration.

Custodian/Circulation Clerk Chappell is still on medical leave. After his next doctor’s appointment, he should have an idea as to when he can return to work.

Carpet cleaning is scheduled for March 30 with Jeff’s ChemDry. It has been 2 years since the last professional cleaning.

Board Members’ Reports

Trustee Raver showed the board the recently acquired plague which is displayed in the William Jennings Bryan Reading Area that honors late Board Member Sherman Doolen. Trustee Doolen was the driving force behind the creation of the library’s William Jennings Bryan Reading Area.

President Gaston wanted the board to know that with the takeover of First Bank by Peoples State Bank that the board might need to consider making some changes to accounts that are currently held at First Bank. She stated that she, Vice President Raver and Treasurer Hahn will check into this matter when the time arrives.

Adjournment

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Trustee Raver with a second by Trustee Wilkerson. All agreed. The meeting adjourned at 7:24 pm
